The Burden of Freedom and the Last Great Republican Party
I refuse to abandon the Republican Party, but I cannot accept it in its current state. The Republican Party was born in the fire of freedom. It was a movement that dared to challenge the most inhumane institution of its time, also known as slavery. Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican president, signed the Emancipation Proclamation not because it was popular, but because it was right. He believed that freedom was not a gift from government, but a divine right worth protecting.
I believe in the American promise. But true democracy is held to the tenor of those who are willing to ensure impartial policy to that promise. And that the burden of government is to be the gatekeeper of freedom, not the arbitrator of free will.
